A team of researchers from Université Laval and CHU de Québec identified unusually high levels of a certain protein in the brains of people suffering from essential tremor (ET), a movement disorder that affects 4% of the adult population. TSO3 announces that the Company has been notified by the European Patent Office of its decision to grant a patent applied for in 2010. This patent describes a method for controlling condensation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when sterilizing medical devices with hydrogen peroxide, either used alone or in combination with ozone or other chemistries. Several other patent applications covering TSO3's technology are still pending in the United States, Europe,Japan and elsewhere in the world. The Company has also been notified by the Japanese and Australian Patent Offices of their intent to grant two of these other patents.
Ubisoft announces its plans to invest CAD 28 million over the course of three years with the goal of creating 100 new jobs at its Quebec City studio. Canam Group announces the acquisition of a 66% interest in an engineering firm that specializes in wood structures. Amongst the contracts announced today, two of them are major contracts awarded by a leading independent energy company engaged in the exploration, development and production of natural gas and oil in North America. The U.S. government has for the first time approved an adjuvanted vaccine to protect against H5N1 bird flu. The vaccine was made by Quebec City-based ID Biomedical, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline. The approval was announced by the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates vaccines in the United States. The vaccine will not be available commercially; it will be placed in the U.S. government’s emergency stockpile.

The conclusions of a new study, presented in Québec City as part of the 7th Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics, show a favourable link between maple syrup and metabolic health. The in vivo study, conducted by a team led by Dr. André Marette, who holds a Ph. D. from Université Laval, aimed to compare the glycemic index of maple syrup to that of other sweetening agents, including brown rice syrup, corn syrup, agave syrup, honey, molasses and benchmark solution (dextrose), on healthy animals.

Héma-Québec, Québec City and the Government of Québec announce the construction of the C∙LAVIE complex, a cell production facility representing an investment of $21.5Mthat will be built in the Michelet innovation space within the territory of Québec City. The new building, with an area of 3,716 square metres, will provide a controlled environment (white rooms) that complies with good manufacturing practises (GMP), a pre-requisite for regulatory product approval. For the first few years, it will primarily be used to manufacture standardized cell and tissue products for clinical studies. Eventually, it will also ensure large-scale production of approved cellular medications.
