Smart 21 Community 2011: Quebec City’s genius is finally recognized!

Attached documents

On October 22, Quebec City gained another international distinction when it was named one of the Top 21 most intelligent communities (Smart 21 Community 2011) by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), a New York-based independent think tank dedicated to developing the digital economy. The announcement was made by Louis Zacharilla, one of the ICF's founders, at a ceremony in Suwon, South Korea.

A total of 400 cities were evaluated prior to selecting 21 winners that best demonstrate local community efforts to stimulate entrepreneurship and foster the growth of a knowledge-based economy. The winners represent 12 countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Greece, Hungary, India, the Netherlands, Taiwan, the UK and the US). Four Canadian cities were selected (Quebec City; Stratford, Ontario; Windsor-Essex, Ontario; and Winnipeg, Manitoba). The complete list is available here. Please note that 17 of the selected cities were on the Smart 21 list in past years. This was the first time, however, that Quebec International nominated Quebec City for this prestigious contest aimed at celebrating the most ingenious city of the year!

Next step

A second application is being prepared with a view to propelling Quebec City into the ranks of the Top 7. The finalists' names will be announced on January 19, 2011. In light of this year's theme-Health in the Intelligent Community- and given the fact that Quebec City is home to clinicians, researchers and firms revolutionizing the medical sector on a daily basis, we feel confident that Quebec City will make it into the next round, despite the high-level competition.

Showing your support

If you agree that Quebec City deserves this honour and you'd like to show your support, all you have to do is download the tool(s) of your choice (Smart 21 logo, certificate and banner) and display them proudly (website, email signature, etc.). This will demonstrate to the jury that you and the region are rallying behind Quebec City's candidacy as part of the competition. Please become a Quebec City ambassador and be sure to forward this email to your colleagues!
