Economic Update - April 2012
The publication of the latest data confirms that the Quebec City metropolitan region posted solid economic growth in 2011. Indeed, it had one of the highest growth rates in Canada: local GDP grew by 2.4%, beating the annual average of 2.1% recorded in the past three years. Hiring picked up as 15,200 workers were added, bringing the number of jobs created in the past three years to nearly 26,000. Meanwhile, some 100 major private and public-sector projects valued at over $1.8 billion were completed in the Quebec City census metropolitan area (CMA) last year.
The first-quarter results for 2012 suggest that the overall gains made in 2011 carried over into the beginning of the year. The employment market remained on the upswing with an annual gain of 15,200 jobs. Work on investment projects continues as more than 100 initiatives valued at approximately $8 billion are currently underway. In addition, the recent findings of KPMG’s Competitive Alternatives 2012 study confirm the Quebec City region’s leading position in North America.
