The CEO’s Column: Local Businesses in Global Media (March 2022)

The shortest month of the year is already behind us, and businesses in the Québec City region continue to grow and stand out internationally. Here are some accomplishments that showcased Québec City’s thriving business environment over the last month.

MEDICAGO

After working tirelessly for months, Québec City’s biopharmaceutical company Medicago can now pride itself on offering the first Canadian-made vaccine against COVID-19. The vaccine was officially approved by Health Canada in February, and the news has already travelled around the world.   is an adjuvanted plant-based vaccine against COVID-19 produced in partnership with the pharmaceutical company GSK. It is now indicated for active immunization to prevent coronavirus disease in people aged 18 to 64.

FLO (ADDÉNERGIE)

FLO is one of the largest electric vehicle charging networks in North America. Through its recent certification from Californian authorities, FLO sells electricity based on the measurement of kWh of electricity transferred during each charging session using its CoRe+ and SmartTwo Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. In the beginning of March, FLO also announced a new partnership with the MLS New York City Football Club, becoming the official charging partner for the organization’s electric vehicles.

GROUPE OCÉAN

A specialist in naval and underwater work in Quebec, Groupe Océan recently signed a major 10-year contract to provide towing services at the Port of Vancouver. This new agreement consolidates the company’s efforts to continue growing in Western Canada. Starting in July, Groupe Océan will be responsible for both terminals at Roberts Bank, one of Canada’s largest naval shipyards.

PRÉHOS 

Préhos, a company specializing in paramedical technology solutions, secured $7.2 million in funding for an expansion project to facilitate innovation and commercialization. By improving its platform and optimizing its operations, Préhos is hoping to eventually double its workforce and conquer new markets. The platform has already proven successful in several regions in Quebec and Ontario.

ABB 

ABB’s Quebec branch has just secured a $30 million contract with the Canadian company EarthDaily Analytics. Specializing in automation systems, ABB will be executing the contract at its Québec City facility. The investment will be used to develop equipment for taking high-definition images from 10 satellites that will orbit around the Earth. ABB’s technology will continuously capture images of the planet’s land masses and large maritime areas. The satellites will be launched starting in 2023.
